If you were Judging a Beauty Contest, could you be Bribed?

Wed Nov 21, 2012 8:17 am

As Paris (in possession of the golden apple) was bribed by Aphrodite!

I think (at least I hope) that if I had a definite opinion, I would be honest. However, if I thought 2 or more contestants were more-or-less equal, then I'd take the best bribe.

In Avonlea, it would be sooo hard to judge, because Sullivan found lots of the world's most gorgeous people! I reckon Prissy probably has (just about) got the prettiest face; but if one of the close contenders, Anne/Ruby/Diana/Cecily/Sara/Olivia/Felicity offered me a lifetime's supply of minty chocolate in order to vote for them, I may well be swayed. I definitely wouldn't choose, say, Mrs Blewett, no matter what she offered me!

I don't think I could be bribed...but I guess it would depend on the contest and the bribe. ;) I do think though that if Mrs. Blewett tried to get me to vote for her, I might do it...not that I'd want to, but I might be afraid of what she would do if I didn't! ~grin~

Totally! Beauty contests are superficial anyhow, might as well make the most of it.

I couldn't. IF you are pretty, your pretty. If you are ugly, suck it up. :D

Come to think of it, every bloke should enjoy the Anne mini-series: it has 2 babelicious blondes, a few young brunettes, AND a ravishing redhead! Some men may go for girls who dye their tresses an outlandish shade; even their taste = catered for, in the scene where Anne colours her hair green!

Who do you want me to pick and how much are you going to pay me to pick them?

I think LMM imagined the other "Prissy" (Priscilla Grant, "golden and fair") to look more like Wendy Lyon.

In Anne of Ingleside, Bessy Mitchell née Plummer (the long-ago belle of the area) naturally has hair streaked with grey. But the rest of the hair is mousy-brown, whereas she said that at the time of her wedding it was "yaller as gold". Now, many people (including myself) = blonde in infancy, but brunette by the time the teens = reached. Bessy must have had an unusually late surge of melanin.

It sounds as if the poor lady had developed a glandular disorder in middle age? She'd become "enormously fat", yet she evidently wasn't a "Blubber" in her youth.

I think the belle of the Sequel (Anne II) = Anne herself with long, unfettered hair, in the penultimate scene (when she receives her published book, and takes it to Gilbert's sick-bed).

Here's a photo of Megan looking equally ravishing:

I kinda wish I'd been studying Romeo & Juliet at school after that version had been made: I'd have got more into it, if we'd been shown the Megan film at school. It's a pity Jonathan wasn't playing her Romeo, though.
